100 Businesses and Counting – The Welcome to Crews Hill Journey

Update — August 2026: the Welcome to Crews Hill directory has now grown to more than 130 businesses and destinations. This article is retained as a milestone in the project’s journey.

When I started Welcome to Crews Hill, I honestly didn't know how many businesses I would find.

After working in Crews Hill for my entire adult life, like many people, I knew the area for its garden centres, nurseries and family businesses. But as I began exploring, researching and talking to people, I quickly realised there was so much more hiding behind the signs, gates and workshops.

Today I am delighted to say that we have reached a significant milestone.

More than 100 businesses and organisations have now been identified and added to the Welcome to Crews Hill directory.

The journey to get here has felt a little like searching for family on Ancestry.

There have been countless hours spent exploring the area on foot, driving its roads, checking business signs, studying maps, reviewing websites, searching social media, following clues from old listings and piecing together information from dozens of different sources.

Sometimes one business would lead to another. A photograph on a Facebook page would reveal a neighbouring company. A workshop hidden behind a nursery. A business within a business within a business. A passing conversation would uncover a club, charity or organisation that deserved recognition.

The more I searched, the more I realised just how much was here.

What began as a simple idea gradually became a mission I couldn't leave alone.

A mission to showcase the remarkable diversity of businesses that call Crews Hill home.

Of course, the directory includes garden centres, nurseries and outdoor living specialists. But it also includes cafés, crafts, aquatics, pet services, equestrian businesses, retailers, sports clubs, community organisations, tradespeople, specialist suppliers and countless independent enterprises.

The more I looked, the more I found.

As the owner of Three Counties Garden & Leisure Buildings, Crews Hill has been my business home for many years. This community has supported my family, my staff and my business through good times and challenging times alike.

The uncertainty surrounding the future of the area has given me many sleepless nights. Like many business owners, I have worried about what the future may hold for the people, businesses and community that make Crews Hill so special.

I wanted to do something positive.

Something practical.

Something that might help shine a light on what already exists here.

Welcome to Crews Hill is my way of giving something back.

Many of the hours spent researching the directory have taken place late at night when sleep simply would not come. Rather than stare at the ceiling worrying, I decided to channel that energy into something positive.

My sleepless hours became hours of discovery. Hours spent shining a spotlight on hardworking people, generations of family businesses and community organisations that deserve to be seen and celebrated.

The reason I compared this journey to searching for family on Ancestry is because, in many ways, that is exactly what it has felt like.

My own business was founded by my dad. The business has changed since he passed away, but I still see him around every corner of the displays, buildings and pathways that have been part of my life for so many years. Being here still makes me feel close to him, and that means more to me than I can put into words.

He didn't sleep particularly well either, and some of my strongest memories are of the hard work, pride and perseverance he poured into building a business and providing for his family.

Like so many of the business owners featured in this directory, he understood that success is rarely built overnight. It is built through years of commitment, sacrifice, resilience and belief.

As I have researched the businesses of Crews Hill, I have found myself uncovering stories of families, generations, hard work, sacrifice and determination. The more I learned, the more I realised that so many of these businesses share the same values that my dad lived by and probably feel the same about Crews Hill as I do.

In many ways, Welcome to Crews Hill has become my way of honouring that legacy.

Protecting and celebrating Crews Hill feels like protecting a small part of him too.

Today I am also a parent myself.

I want my daughter to grow up with the same sense of belonging that I have always felt here. I want her to have a place she can call her happy place. A place filled with family businesses, familiar faces, community spirit and opportunity. A place she can one day look back on with the same affection that I do and remember her mum.

That is one of the reasons I care so deeply about the future of Crews Hill.

But reaching 100 listings is not the finish line.

In many ways, it is only the beginning.

I know there are still more businesses to discover.

There are descriptions to improve.

Websites to add.

Facebook and Instagram pages to find.

Email addresses to update.

Stories to tell.

Photographs to collect.

And most importantly, there are people behind every business whose contribution deserves recognition.

My ambition is simple.

I want Welcome to Crews Hill to become the most comprehensive and useful guide to the area ever created.

A place where visitors can discover what Crews Hill has to offer.

A place where businesses can support one another.

A place that celebrates the people, organisations and entrepreneurial spirit that make this unique corner of North London so special.

Thank you to everyone who has provided information, shared stories, supplied photographs, offered encouragement or simply followed the journey so far.
